Carta 130a

Summary

Hugh Brogan, now fourteen, had written to Tolkien to bemoan the changes in his voice as he underwent puberty. In his response Tolkien assuages Brogan's concerns about his changing voice, advising patience and caution during the transition. Tolkien shares a personal anecdote about a throat injury that permanently affected his voice.

He also expresses his disinterest in drama, describing it as a personal blind spot, though he acknowledges the fun of acting, albeit with some reservations about its benefits.
