Carta 292
Summary
A "fan" was going to write a "sequel", and sent Tolkien details. Tolkien sent the material to Joy Hill of Allen & Unwin, and asked her of the legal position. He asked for a formal letter from the publisher to dissuade the writer, fearing a publisher might publish "such tripe". He explained that when he personally rejected an earlier fan-proposed sequel the young writer wrote a harsh rant back.
