Carta 42c

Summary

Tolkien had gone to a meeting of the Inklings on Thursday of the previous week, but it was "rather a failure": Warren Lewis had been counting on Robert Havard ("Honest Humphrey, or the noble doctor") for a ride home, but when Warren discovered that Havard was not going to arrive, he changed Havard's title to "Useless Quack". This nickname was later adopted by the Inklings (for example, see Letter 48).

Tolkien also wrote that he went to Mass with Michael at St. Gregory's, but found the church "running to seed", with poor singing from the gallery and a strange priest speaking incomprehensibly.
