On 30 March 1951, Tolkien wrote a letter to Florence Tolkien.
- Subject: Tolkien says they are probably third cousins and tells her about the family history.
- Publication: The letter has not been published in print. It appears in its entirety in an entry made on 17 April 2019 on Ryszard Derdziński's blog Tolkniety.
History
Derdziński tells that he became aware of the letter's existence through corresponding with the receiver's granddaughter, Charlaine Tolkien, who contacted him via ancestry.com. The original seems to be lost but a transcript, hand-written by Florence, was preserved.
