Húrin of Emyn Arnen

Steward of Gondor

Húrin of Emyn Arnen was the first recorded Steward of Gondor.

History

Being a noble of high trust and wisdom (and of ultimately royal descent, being a kinsman of King Minardil), he was chosen to serve under the King as Steward of Gondor.

However, unlike any previous stewards, whose chief task was the supervision of the King's estates and properties, Húrin acted as the chief counsellor to the King, as well as being granted the right to assume the duties of the King in his absence, and having a say in choosing a successor to the throne, in the case the King died without an apparent heir.

During his service, Húrin laboured greatly on the ordering of Gondor in the days of the Great Plague.

Afterwards, Minardil's heirs opted to select their own Stewards not from any noble Gondorians, but from Húrin's sons and descendants; thus Stewardship was connected to the House of Húrin, and after some generations it became hereditary.

Etymology

Húrin is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but the Association Tollkiendil suggests it means "Strong Heart". It is probably a combination of hûr ("vigour", "fiery spirit", readiness for action) and ind ("heart"). Húrin of Emyn Arnen was named after the hero of the First Age Húrin Thalion.
