Hyarmendacil II

__NOTOC__

Hyarmendacil II, born with the name Vinyarion (Third Age 1391 - Third Age 1621), was the twenty-fourth King of Gondor.

History

Vinyarion ascended the throne after his father Aldamir was killed in a battle with the Harad and the Corsairs of Umbar in Third Age 1540. Eleven years later, in Third Age 1551, he defeated the Men of the Harad and took the name Hyarmendacil II.

Etymology

Vinyarion is a Quenya name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests that it means "New Son" and is a compound of vinya ("new") and the suffix ion ("son").

Hyarmendacil is a Quenya name. It means "South-victor". It is a compound of hyarmen ("south") and -(n)dacil ("victor").

Other versions of the legendarium

In a late manuscript of what would later become Appendix A, it is mentioned that Vinyarion took the name Hyarmendakil II in 1551 after a great victory over Harad in revenge for the death of his father Aldamir.
