Battle Games in Middle-earth

Partwork magazine for The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game

Battle Games in Middle-earth was a fortnightly partwork dedicated to The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, published by DeAgostini using material and models from Games Workshop. 91 regular issues (called Packs) and three movie specials were released. The magazine ran from 2002 to 2006.

Outside of the English-speaking world, the magazine was localized in several different languages.

Contents

Each Pack came with a miniature. Some issues also contained paints, cardboard cut-out characters, or other components.

The Packs themselves generally contained one or more articles of the following series:

  • Guide to Middle-earth, which were short write-ups about characters and lore
  • Playing the Game, which introduced rules piece-meals
  • Battle Game, which featured battle scenarios
  • Painting Workshop, which were painting guides for included miniatures
  • Modelling Workshop, which were guides on how to build scenery and terrain
Reception and impact

Alan and Michael Perry, Games Workshop sculptors whose work was sometimes packaged with issues, found that it encouraged new people into the miniature gaming hobby.

After the partwork's conclusion, Mark Latham, an editor and writer, and Glenn More, a graphic designer, were moved to White Dwarf, which is Games Workshop's magazine. This is a prospect fans found exciting, for they found White Dwarf to lack depth in its coverage of Lord of the Rings content.
