The Deeping-coomb was a deep valley on the northern side of the White Mountains that led up to Helm's Deep and the castle of the Hornburg.

The Deeping-coomb was a green valley whose grass covered slopes lapped the mounting hills. Its mouth was five leagues (15 miles) from the Fords of Isen.

The Deeping-coomb was the site of an important battle, the Battle of the Hornburg, during the War of the Ring.

Etymology

The name has the sense the "deep valley belonging to the Deep" to which it led.

A Coomb is a "deep valley", occurring frequently in English place-names in the forms -comb, -cumb, -combe, etc.
