Summary
Tolkien said he was having difficulty with an unspecified American professor and also dealing with retiring and the subsequent election of his fellow Inkling, Nevill Coghill to the Merton Professorship of English Literature. These situations prevented him from being able to work on The Silmarillion. Tolkien encouraged Rayner to come and see him as he would not be able to visit London during the term.
