Carta 339a

Summary

In this letter to his son Christopher, Tolkien reports that he was in good health and had adapted well to his environment, overcoming previous stomach issues. Tolkien described a period of indulgence, having enjoyed substantial meals and drinks at various social events, including the Redesdale Arms with his John, the Encaenia celebration, the Pembroke Gaudy, and a grand "Ad Eundem" dinner at Wadham College on June 30.

He also mentioned a luncheon at 'Rules' in Covent Garden, hosted by Rayner Unwin, which coincided with his visit to the offices and staff on Museum Street. Tolkien noted that he planned to visit the chief office and depot of Allen & Unwin in Hemel Hempstead on July 14, anticipating further gastronomic challenges. Despite this busy social calendar, he admitted to having done little that could be considered work, aside from dictating a few things to his secretary.
