Carta 91a
Background
Tolkien wrote two letters to Christopher on 29 November. The one published as no. 91 was sent with a parcel containing two chapters of The Lord of the Rings, 'Shelob's Lair' and 'The Choices of Master Samwise'. Letter 91a is from the main letter sent separately.
Summary
In a letter to his son Christopher, Tolkien describes his Tuesday, which included giving two lectures in near-darkness due to heavy clouds, and then enjoying a memorable morning at The Eagle and Child. The gathering, which included C.S. Lewis, Warnie, Charles Williams, and the 'Red Admiral', celebrated C.S. Lewis's birthday, which they discovered was on 29 November.
