Background
The poem was written around 1924 and features two voices arguing about the titular Lion. The second line was originally written as "is loud and proud, is what I said", but Tolkien rejected this for the current second line.
Tolkien likely may have given the only manuscript containing the poem to E.V. Gordon because the manuscript currently resides at the Gordon archive in the University of Leeds.
