Peregrin of the Tower Guard

Peregrin of the Tower Guard is the twenty-fifth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (extended edition). This scene was not featured in the theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Synopsis

Pippin sits on a bench in the uniform of the Guards of the Citadel reflecting on his decision to offer his allegiance to Denethor, and wondering what service he, a hobbit, can offer the Steward. Faramir walks towards him and tells him that "a generous deed should not be checked with cold counsel". Smiling at Pippin, Faramir tells him that the livery he is wearing was once his own when he was a child. He tells the hobbit that Boromir was always the soldier and his older brother and father were very alike.

Differences

In the book, it is Gandalf who tells Pippin that "generous deed should not be checked by cold counsel", in response to Pippin asking the wizard if he is angry with him for swearing himself to the service of Denethor.
