Andwise Roper
History
Andwise was the son of Hobson "Roper" Gamgee, an older brother of Hamfast Gamgee. Whereas his brother became a gardener, Andwise inherited the family rope-walk in Tighfield, and continued the family trade. He left his ropewalk to his son Anson after his death, founding the Roper family.
Sam Gamgee, seeing how the Elves used ropes to cross the Silverlode in Lothlórien, said that not even his "Uncle Andy" did those tricks. Later he mentioned him and Hobson as an example that to know about ropes and knots is "in the family".
Etymology
The name comes from Old English andwīs which means "expert, skilful".
