The Hill of Guard or Amon Tirith was the outlying hill on which Minas Tirith was built. On its western side it was joined with Mount Mindolluin by a narrow shoulder which rose to the height of the fifth wall of the city. It was originally called Amon Anor (S. 'Hill of the Sun').

Etymology

Amon Tirith is the Sindarin rendition of "Hill of Guard". Paul Strack suggests that it is a combination of amon ("hill") and tirith ("watch", "guard").

Portrayal in adaptations

2017: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Normally inaccessible, the Hill of Guard can be observed during a mission in which the player accompanies King Elessar to the sappling of the White Tree.
