Map of Wilderland

The Map of Wilderland, depicting the region of Rhovanion, is included in The Hobbit (and as plate No. 87 in J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator).
The map was drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien, and a preliminary version of the map appears as plate No. 84 in J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator. In 1979 a coloured version by H.E. Riddett was published as a poster by Allen & Unwin.
J.R.R. Tolkien added the river names "Mitheithel = Hoarwell", "Bruinen" with "Loudwater" below it to the river flowing north of Rivendell, "Merrill" to the river flowing south of Rivendell, "Rushdown" with "Rhimdath" below it and "R. Gladden" and the area names "Entish land", "Hoardale" and "Gladden Fields" in pencil on the Map of Wilderland in one of his copies of The Hobbit.
