The Third Map of The Lord of the Rings

The Third Map of The Lord of the Rings is the last general small-scale map that was drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien during the writing of The Lord of the Rings. The Third Map of The Lord of the Rings is not included in The History of Middle-earth series of books, but some of its contents are described in Sauron Defeated and in The Peoples of Middle-earth. Based on the statements that the distance due East from the Morgai to Mount Doom is 80 miles on The Third Map and that the Little Lune was first marked on the third and last of J.R.R. Tolkien's maps on which Christopher Tolkien's map that was published with the Lord of the Rings was closely based, it is possible that the map titled MIDDLE-EARTH, previously available in the Tolkien Estate website's maps section, is The Third Map of The Lord of the Rings, because it contains those two features and its features are very close to the General Map of Middle-earth. Contour lines are used for the mountains and hills on that map that was drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien. That map uses map-squares of 2 centimetres side and a scale of 2 centimetres (one square) for 100 miles.
