- Gandalf urges an attack on Dol Guldur. Saruman (who desired the One Ring and hoped that it would reveal itself with Sauron's presence) overrules him.
- Saruman begins to search near the Gladden Fields.
- King Walda with his companions ride by mountain-paths from Dunharrow. They are trapped and slain by orcs.
- Folca, son of Walda, becomes the thirteenth King of Rohan.
- Birth of Halfred Greenhand, second child and first son of Holman the greenhanded.
