Ciryatanor

In Middle-earth Role Playing, Ciryatanor or Anbalukkhôr was a Númenórean colony that turned into an independent Kingdom allied with Mordor under the reign of Akhôrahil the Ringwraith. Its capital was Marath Carnadúnê (Q. “Tower of the Red Sunset”, S. Barad Carannûn).

History

Second Age

The colony was founded as a Númenórean client-kingdom by Ciryamir in Second Age 1904, at the northern flank of the Yellow Mountains, and was named after Tar-Ciryatan. In Second Age 1919, Ciryamir's son Akhôrahil ascended to the throne after having influenced his father into suicide a year earlier. As the self-declared Storm King, he expanded the kingdom along the Yellow Mountains through various conquests in Sîrayn: Chennacatt in Second Age 1929, Isra in Second Age 1933, and Kirmiesra in Second Age 1979. Pushing through Harshandat, his armies had reached the Bay of Ormal by Second Age 1999.

The Storm King renounced his allegiance to Númenor in Second Age 2250. The army of Tar-Ancalimon landed in Tulwang in Second Age 2280. The Storm King's armies were defeated and his capital was razed. Akhôrahil himself fled to Mordor. It is unclear what happened to Ciryatanor until it is mentioned again in the Third Age.

Third Age

After Third Age 1050, Akhôrahil moved into the fortress of Ny Chennacatt, hoping to reclaim his former kingdom. He assembled a new army, the Army of the Southern Dragon, and secured the allegiance of Orc-lords from the Yellow Mountains and traitors to the Free Peoples of Greater Harad. This army, headed by Utchû, launched campaigns against Ciryatanor in Third Age 1660 and Third Age 1705, and it is finally conquered in Third Age 1802. Barad Carannûn is the capital, so presumably it had been rebuilt since its razing. Utchû turned on his liege twelve years later. The new Army of the Southern Dragon attacked Utchû's Ciryatanor in Third Age 1815, and a year later, Akhôrahil visited the city for the last time to reorganize its leadership.

In Third Age 2013, a civil war split the kingdoms of Tulwang and Ciryatanor into tiny petty kingdoms. The Sun Lord Pon Ifta conquered Ciryatanor in Third Age 2205.

Fandom

In fan projects elaborating on Greater Harad, such as the New Notion Club Archives and Realms in Exile, the kingdom is instead known as An-Balkûmagân, with the reasoning being that Ciryatanor is not a name the King's Men would use and that Anbalukkhôr is not a entirely correct equivalent either.
