Aragost (Third Age 2431 - Third Age 2588, age 157) was the eighth Chieftain of the Dúnedain, succeeding his father, Arahad I, when he died in Third Age 2523.
History
Aragost's rule was uneventful due to the enemy's forces being concentrated against Gondor and Rhovanion. Aragost died in 2588 - after having ruled for 65 years - and was followed by his son, Aravorn.
Etymology
Aragost is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but the Association Tolkiendil suggests it means "Royal Dread". It is probably a compound of the prefix ar(a)- ("noble", "royal", "high") and gost ("dread", "terror").
Other versions of the legendarium
In an early manuscript Aragost's name was "Arandost".
