Berilac Brandybuck

Berilac Brandybuck was a Hobbit of the Shire.

History

Berilac was the son of Merimac Brandybuck. He was a guest at Bilbo's Farewell Party.

Etymology

The meaning of the name Berilac is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.

A note in the edition of the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by J.R.R. Tolkien and E.V. Gordon mentions the name Bercilak de Hautdesert as the name of the Green Knight. This mote also mentions that it is not clear if the fourth letter in the name of this character should be read as a "c" or a "t". The similar name Bertilak was used by J.R.R. Tolkien as the name of the Green Knight in his translation of the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Other versions of the legendarium

In an earlier version of the family tree of the Brandybuck family he had the name Bercilac.
