Doderic Brandybuck

Doderic Brandybuck was a Hobbit of the Shire.

History

Doderic was a son of Seredic Brandybuck and Hilda Bracegirdle. He attended Bilbo's Farewell Party.

Etymology

The meaning of the name Doderic is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.

Jim Allan suggests that the name Doderic is a Germanic form of Theuderic with the variatons Theodoric and Dietrich and is a combination of the elements theud ("people") and ric ("rule", "reign").

Other versions of the legendarium

In an earlier version of the family tree of the Brandybuck family he had the name Roderic, the name of a Visigothic king of Spain between A.D. 710 and 711.

Portrayal in adaptations

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Doderic Brandybuck had ventured into the Old Forest along with his friend Rollo, son of Farmer Maggot. Saradoc Brandybuck asks the player to find them and send them back.
