Ilberic Brandybuck was a Hobbit of the Shire.

History

Ilberic was the second son of Seredic Brandybuck and Hilda Bracegirdle, born in . In little Ilberic attended Bilbo's Farewell Party with his family.

Etymology

The meaning of the name Ilberic is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.

Jim Allan suggests that the name Ilberic seems to be Germanic. It is a variaton of the name Alberic and contains the elements alb ("Elf") and ric ("reign", "rule"). Alberic is a dwarf king in medieval German heroic literature who appears in Richard Wagner's Ring cycle.

Other versions of the legendarium

In an earlier version of the family tree for the Brandybucks, the name of Ilberic was Alberic.
