Etymology

The meaning of the name Madoc is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.

Madoc is a Welsh name, which is derived from the element mad ("fortunate"). According to a tradition a Madoc who was the son of Owen Gwynedd discovered America around A.D. 1170. A Madok de la Montayne is mentioned by Malory in Le Morte Darthur.
