Mornië was the ship of the dead in the early version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales.

It plied between Mandos and Eruman, and its beaching place was Hanstovánen. After judging the dead of the race of Men, Fui led some to Mandos or Angamandi, but most of them were sent abroad the black ship Mornië. When the ship was filled, it spread its black sails by itself and sailed south carried by a slow wind. As they pass by, the dead were allowed to have a glimpse of Valinor. Then they reached the great plains of Arvalin, where they wandered or camped in the dusk, being allowed to sing and see the stars, waiting until the Great End.

Etymology

Mornië is Qenya for "Black Grief", and its Gnomish cognate was Mornir, from morn ("dark, black") + nîr ("grief").
