Carta 143e
Summary
In a letter to his publisher Allen & Unwin, Tolkien approves some amendments to The Lord of the Rings, which is due to released in the coming months. However, he regrets not having had more time over the past year to give his full attention to these small details. Tolkien also acknowledges discovering a few errors in the 'runic' decoration of the title page but concedes that they must remain as they are.
He anticipates having to provide explanations or apologies to those who decipher the runes, referencing similar scrutiny faced with the runes on The Hobbit jacket.
