Aranuir

Aranuir (Third Age 2084 - Third Age 2247, died aged 163) was the third of the Chieftains of the Dúnedain, following the death of his father, Arahael, in 2177.

History

As far as records go, Aranuir's rule was uneventful. Aranuir died in Third Age 2247, after having been chieftain for seventy years, and was followed by his son, Aravir.

Etymology

Aranuir is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but the Association Tolkiendil suggests it means "Eternal King". It is probably a compound of aran ("king", "lord", "chief", [lit.] high or noble person) and uir ("eternity").

Other versions of the legendarium

In an early manuscript Aranuir's name was "Aranuil".
