Finduilas (wife of Denethor)

Mother of Boromir and Faramir

Finduilas (Third Age 2950 - Third Age 2988) was the daughter of Adrahil the Prince of Dol Amroth. She was the sister of Ivriniel and Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth. She became the wife of Denethor II and the mother of Boromir and Faramir.

Named after Finduilas, an Elf-maiden of the First Age, she was of great beauty and gentle heart.

History

In Third Age 2976 she was wed to the much older Denethor, son of Ecthelion II the Steward of Gondor.

In Third Age 2978 she gave birth to Boromir, most loved by his father. In Third Age 2983 she gave birth to her second son, Faramir, and afterwards grew weak. Faramir was ignored by his father, and she did her best to raise him on her own.

In Third Age 2984 Ecthelion died, and Denethor became Steward of Gondor. Nevertheless the health of the Lady Finduilas dwindled in the city. The shadow of Mordor filled her with horror while she never stopped missing the sea, and four years later she died at the very young age of thirty-eight (considering her heritage as a Dúnadan).

Legacy

Denethor never remarried, and became more grim and silent than before. It was not long after her death that he would sit long alone in his tower deep in thought, foreseeing that the assault from Mordor would come in his time. Thus he began using the palantír of Minas Tirith, and the despair fed to his mind led to his ultimate insanity and suicide some thirty-one years later.

Other versions of the legendarium

Originally, the name of the wife of Denethor was Emmeril, which in the act of writing was changed by Tolkien to Rothinel.
