- 15: Gandalf meets Thorin near Bree and eventually decide about the Quest of Erebor.

- 6: Bilbo Baggins is out for Yestare; Gandalf visits Bag End, talks with Holman Greenhand and realises Bilbo is the right person for the Quest.
- Thorin and Gandalf visit Bilbo in the Shire.
- The next day Thorin and Company depart for the Green Dragon. Bilbo catches up at 11 a.m. Quest for Erebor begins.

- Bilbo meets Gollum and finds the One Ring.
- The White Council meets.
- Saruman agrees to an Attack on Dol Guldur, since he now wishes to prevent Sauron from searching the Anduin.
