Carta 130
Summary
Tolkien had, by way of example, sent in a new version of the chapter Riddles in the Dark, which Allen & Unwin included in the second edition of The Hobbit. Tolkien had hesitated about what to say in regards to two versions of this crucial event, but now decided to accept the existence of both. With this letter came a short explanatory note, also meant for inclusion, saying that the text as it now was (Bilbo found/stole the Ring) was what actually happened, and that the earlier version (Bilbo won the Ring) was an attempt by Bilbo to cover this up.
