Eärnil I

Eärnil I (Third Age 736 – Third Age 936, aged 200 years) was the thirteenth King of Gondor and the second Ship-king.

History

Eärnil was the son of Tarciryan, the brother of King Tarannon Falastur. He succeeded his uncle Tarannon Falastur, who died childless in Third Age 913. He continued with the expansionist maritime policy of his predecessor by repairing the haven of Pelargir and building a great fleet. Eärnil besieged Umbar by land and by sea and conquered Umbar in Third Age 933. Umbar became a great haven and fortress of Gondor. Eärnil died together with many men in a great storm off Umbar, in which many ships sank. He was succeeded by his son Ciryandil.

Etymology

Eärnil is a Quenya name. It is a shortened form of Eärendil.

Other versions of the legendarium

In a late manuscript of what would later become Appendix A it is also mentioned that he fortified Umbar after he took it.
