Karen Wynn Fonstad
Karen Lea Wynn Fonstad (April 18, 1945 – March 11, 2005) was the author of the popular Atlas of Middle-earth. In The Return of the Shadow, Christopher Tolkien credits Fonstad for noting a geographical inconsistency between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Life
Karen Wynn was born and raised in Oklahoma, spending her later years in Wisconsin. She attended the University of Oklahoma, where she received a M.A. in Geography. Her speciality had been Cartography, and she would spend much of her life as a freelance cartographer. She has published several atlases of fantasy worlds, such as Arda, Pern, Krynn, Toril and The Land.
