La Feuille de la Compagnie 3
La Feuille de la Compagnie, 'vol.3, J.R.R. Tolkien, l'effigie des Elfes' is an issue of the French journal La Feuille de la Compagnie. It includes the full versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's manuscripts "Converse of Manwë and Eru" (1959), "Reincarnation of Elves" (1959-1966), and "Some Notes on 'Rebirth', Reincarnation by Restoration, among Elves" (1972). These manuscripts were originally published in part or summarised in Morgoth's Ring and The Peoples of Middle-earth.
The issue was originally intended for publication in 2006.
From the publisher
By imagining immortal Elves, Tolkien intended to represent the problem of our death: it is not that the Elves do not know death, but they are reincarnated. We will read here a set of texts, unpublished, of Tolkien answering the questions that the reader asks himself, about the Buddhism, the Celts, or the resurrection. We will also read a summary, unpublished in French, of the Silmarillion by C.S. Kilby who had helped Tolkien to prepare its publication (aborted) in 1966. Third volume of La Feuille de la Compagnie which continues a serious consideration on the work of the author of The Lord of the Rings, this set of studies develops, in particular, themes that surface in Tolkien's unpublished works, the harmonics of which are thus explored. Whether it is the "marring of Arda" (conceived differently by the Valar or the Elves), transmission of thought, Lórien, or the figure of Tom Bombadil, the investigations gathered here unfold the linguistic questions, philosophical, and sometimes theological, that Tolkien posed. By focusing on a character, a place, the relationship with others, or a vision of the world: they help us to penetrate, each in its own way, into Middle-earth.
