Carta a G.E. Selby (1955/6)

Sometime between late 1955 and early 1956, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to G.E. Selby.

  • Subject: Tolkien writes about the publication of The Lord of the Rings, which he says is not a trilogy and not an allegory. He also "comments on reviews, Frodo's failure, the Elvish languages, and the poem Errantry".
  • Publication: Extracts from the letter appeared in Sotheby's Nineteenth Century and Modern First Editions, Presentation Copies, Autograph Letters and Literary Manuscripts 28-29 July 1977, and in Sotheby's Catalogue of Autograph Letters, Literary Manuscripts and Historical Documents 16 October 1978. A summary of the letter was provided by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond in The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide: Chronology.
