Härskarringen

Härskarringen ("The Ruling Ring") is the name of Åke Ohlmarks's translation into Swedish of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

History

While the work as a whole is popularly known as Sagan om ringen in Sweden (and sometimes also titled so by the publishers), this is properly the title of the translation (published in 1959) of The Fellowship of the Ring. In 1960 followed Sagan om de två tornen (The Two Towers), and in 1961 Sagan om konungens återkomst (The Return of the King).

Härskarringen was the second translation of The Lord of the Rings (the first being the Dutch translation by Max Schuchart, In de Ban van de Ring).

A second Swedish translation of The Lord of the Rings came in 2004-5: Ringarnas herre, translated by Erik Andersson.

In a letter of July 1960, Tolkien expresses his dislike for the cover art for Sagan om ringen, since it contradicts the text.
