Lego The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game

Lego The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game is a video game by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Traveller's Tales. The game is based on The Lord of the Rings (film series) and was released in 13 November 2012. It features the story lines of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King but "reimagined with the humor and endless variety of LEGO play".

In 2011, a Wikia user claimed to have found a bit of evidence for a Lego The Lord of the Rings video game, when discovering key words ("LOTR Ring") within the program files of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. However, other Wikia users remarked that those key words might have another meaning within the files.

Gameplay

The game follows the traditional formula common to most Lego games by Traveller's Tales. Each level represents events from the respective chapters of the movies they portray. The world is made of both Lego objects and non-Lego objects. Lego objects are interactable, whether that involves breaking them for studs (the in-game currency), assembling them out of component Lego pieces, or manipulating them in some fashion such as pushing a crate to use as a platform. Many characters have unique abilities, such as elven characters jumping higher than the rest of the cast, or wizard characters using magical staves to attack. The player will also engage in combat with enemies. When they are hit by enemy attacks or environmental hazards such as fire, the player loses a heart. Upon losing all hearts, the player character is broken apart, reappearing a few seconds later but losing studs in the process. The game features drop-in cooperative play, which means a second player can assume control of a different character at any time to assist the first player. They may also drop out and have the computer resume control over the character.

The goal of each level varies. Some levels simply require the player to get to the end. Other levels may require more complex objectives, such as a defeating a powerful boss character or enacting a major environmental change. The first playthrough of each level is always in "Story Mode", which recreates the events of the movie. Subsequent playthroughs may be done in "Free Play" mode, where any character the player has unlocked may be used to gather additional items or unlock new areas. In between levels, players explore a recreation of Middle-earth and can complete small challenges for Mithril bricks, one of the game's main collectables. Players may also fast-travel by selecting the desired location or level on the map screen of the overworld.
