Narmacil II

Narmacil II became King of Gondor when his father Telumehtar died in Third Age 1850. A year later in Third Age 1851, incited by emissaries from Sauron the Wainriders, a people or a confederacy of many peoples that came from the East, had been stirred up by emissaries from Sauron and began to attack Gondor. The Northmen, a confederation of peoples that lived in the wide plains between Mirkwood and the River Running, bore the main impact of the first attack of the Wainriders.

In Third Age 1856 Narmacil II came with a great army to the plains south of Mirkwood and assembled as many of the dispersed remnants of the Northmen as was possible and fought with the aid of horsemen of the Northmen under Marhari, a descendant of Vidugavia against the Wainriders in the Battle of the Plains. In that battle the army of Gondor and the Northmen were defeated and Narmacil II was killed. The remnant of the army of Gondor with a reardguard of the horsemen of the Northmen retreated over the Dagorlad to Ithilien, but Marhari was killed during the retreat. However, the army of Gondor had inflicted such losses on the Wainriders that they did not enough forces left to continue with their invasion of Gondor without further reinforcements from the East and instead completed their conquest of Rhovanion.

Gondor withdrew its borders for that time to the Anduin and the Emyn Muil and abandoned all its eastern lands except Ithilien. A few of the Northmen fled over the River Running and joined the folk of Dale with whom they were related, some Northmen searched refuge in Gondor and other Northmen were assembled by Marhwini, the son of Marhari and migrated north between the Anduin and Mirkwood and settled in the Vales of Anduin. Many Northmen fled through Mirkwood and joined Marhari's group. The rest of the Northmen were enslaved by the Wainriders who had occupied all their former lands. It is believed that the Ringwraiths reentered Mordor at this time.

Narmacil was succeeded by his son Calimehtar.

The earliest version of what would later become Appendix A mentioned that there was a battle with the Ringwraiths in his time, that the Ringwraiths seized Mordor and that Osgiliath ended to be the seat of the Kings of Gondor. In the next version the Ringwraiths had seized Mordor long ago, attacked Ithilien and the Witch-king killed Narmakil. This was changed to that the Ringwraiths reentered Mordor, that Men out of the East riding in great wains attacked Gondor and that Narmakil was killed in battle. In the latest version the ceasing of the vigilance is added as the reason for the Ringwraiths reentering Mordor. It is added that Narmakil II died in a battle northeast of the Morannon with Men out of the East, but those men still remain unnamed.
